Back-to-School Cool

Gray is the new blue; skorts rule; and accessories are the new underwear–a definite must-have. This according to the back-to-school fashion police. Thank goodness my kid wears uniforms to school. Unless you’ve been living under a rock, then you probably know that millions of students from coast-to-coast are getting ready to head back to class. In fact, in many states the kiddos are already hitting the books. Still, if you are an avid or even occasional TV viewer then you might think that school has nothing to do with books and oh, I don’t know, learning tangible skills, and is … Continue reading

Back To School On A Budget

When I leave for work in the morning I can tell fall is on the way. A few short weeks ago it was light out at 5:45, now it’s dark, and there is a chill in the air that reminds me the seasons are changing. Although I don’t really need the weather or lack of morning light to tell me, all I have to do is walk in any store and be bombarded with the back to school displays. The first school year that I was divorced was so stressful, where was the money going to come from? Hailey was … Continue reading

School Supply Shopping

It’s that time of year—the time when all the school supplies are on sale. Pens! Pencils! Notebooks! Glue! It’s almost more than I can stand—I love all that stuff. It’s tempting to run around and put ten of everything in your cart, isn’t it? But for the most part, homeschoolers aren’t all that wealthy (why is that, anyway?) and we often need to shop wisely for the things we need. I encourage you to think about your family dynamics as you make your shopping list. Children who are homeschooled don’t have a daily need for backpacks and lunchboxes, so don’t … Continue reading

Save On Craft Supplies For Valentines At Michaels

Valentine’s Day is coming up in just a few weeks. Soon, parents will be presented with a list of the names of all the children who share a classroom with their child, and expected to provide valentines for each and every one of them. Instead of buying those pre-made valentines that have cartoon characters on them, wouldn’t it be more fun to make handmade valentines this year? You can save on craft supplies that are perfect for Valentine’s Day at Michaels. While I don’t know exactly how much money I have spent at Michaels over the years, I am certain … Continue reading

Sales Tax Holiday

August 20 through 22, 2010, is the sales tax holiday or tax-free weekend in Texas. The sales tax exemption applies to clothes and shoes that are under $100. Backpacks are also included in the exemption. Students who like to pull their heavy book-load can rest assured that their bags are still covered as long as the bag can be worn on the back. (I wish we’d had wheeled bookbags when I was in school.) Shoppers are allowed to buy up to ten backpacks at a time and still be tax-free. To help even further anything typically classified as school supplies … Continue reading

School Supplies are Tax Free From Kohl’s in Illinois

It’s that time of year again! School will be starting soon, and your children are going to need new school supplies, new clothes for school, and new shoes for gym class. If you live in Illinois, you can get these items tax free from Kohl’s this week. I signed up to be on the email list for Kohl’s when I first got their store credit card. Since then, I have received information about all of the upcoming and current sales. This makes it really easy for me to learn what is on sale, without ever having to leave my house. … Continue reading

Back to School in July

We are in the middle of a heat wave here on the East Coast, with temperatures more than 100 degrees today. The kids are alternating between helping their father do some landscaping on his day off and running through a sprinkler set up on the driveway. It is definitely a scorcher. Meanwhile, I am in the house, preparing for back to school. Yes, that seems strange, and no, we don’t have a year around school here. But now is a good time to get started on back to school, because it helps to save money. Shortly after the Fourth of … Continue reading

Preschoolers Need Lunchboxes Too

At least that’s what my daughter maintains. Long before we started counting down the days until her first day of kindergarten my young daughter insisted that she needed to have a lunchbox. Mind you she was not enrolled in school at the time. She simply could not resist the aisles upon aisles of colorful lunchboxes and bags we passed at practically every store during the months of August and September. Last year when the back-to-school items went on sale I finally gave in to her pleas and bought her the Hello Kitty lunchbox she had been drooling over for weeks. … Continue reading

The Garage Sale Free and Cheapie Boxes

It isn’t too late to have your garage sale. The weather is still warm enough and people are still out there buying. You might be able to make enough for back to school supplies or even a new desk for your child. And it is great to have some extra cash for the upcoming holiday season. Today I wanted to talk a little bit about having a free and or a cheapie box at your yard sale. This is a box that contains items you are willing to give away for free or items that you are willing to let … Continue reading
